MAKING DECISIONS—THE PROCESS

1. Recognize and define the decision to be made.

▪ Why are you faced with a decision?

▪ Can you identify the basic problem?

2. Know what is important to you and what you want to accomplish.

▪ Do you know and understand your basic life values?

▪ What do you want?

▪ Can you state your objective clearly?

3. Examine the information you already have.

▪ What do you know about your alternatives?

▪ What information do you already have?

▪ Is it enough to make a decision?

4. Seek and utilize new information and options.

▪ What don’t you know about your alternatives?

▪ What sources can you explore to get more information?

5. Identify possible internal and external barriers that may prevent you from making satisfying decisions.

▪ Can you decide without being unduly influenced by others?

▪ Do your emotions interfere with your decision-making?

▪ Are you able to take risks?

6. Assess the possible outcome and desirability of each alternative.

▪ Do you know the risks of each option?

▪ What is the chance of success of each alternative?

▪ What is the desirability of each option (for you)?

▪ When you consider the possibilities, are the rewards of success more important than the consequences of failure?

▪ Can you eliminate some alternatives?

7. Make a decision—choose one alternative.

▪ Focus yourself.

▪ Commit your time, energy, and feelings.

8. Review your decision.

▪ How does your choice feel?

▪ Are you committed to your decision?

▪ Have you devoted enough time to the above steps?

▪ Are you ready for the risks involved?

9. Plan.

▪ Develop an action strategy.

▪ Have a Plan “B”. Remain flexible, alert and confident!
